SPERRY SHOES - PROPERLY WEARING BOAT SHOES
Obviously, boat shoes are best avoided during the winter unless you live in a hot tropical climate. They are best paired with slim, clean-lined jeans, khakis, slacks or shorts. Some people like to roll up their denims to draw the focus on the shoes — not my cup of tea but why not? Dark or white denims go very well with boat shoes especially when combined with a polo shirt or an Oxford cloth button-down shirt in solid colors or vivid stripes. To me, boat shoes are casual and I would not wear them with a suit or sport coat but that doesn’t mean you can’t wear them that way if you enjoy the look. A few years ago, most boat shoes were only available in neutral colors such as navy blue, brown, gray, beige or black. As a classic rule of thumb, boat shoes should never be lighter in color than your pants or shorts. In recent years, even classic manufacturers in Maine have begun to offer a plethora of vividly-colored shoes in ruby red, royal blue, grass green, orange, yellow… and sometimes even a combination thereof. Some boat shoes even come in three colors for a trendier look, and since all rules are made to be broken, go right ahead and wear something bright if you can pull it off. In regard to material, chrome & oil-tanned cowhide seems to be ideal but you’ll also see them in suede and patent leather. Personally, I reserve my boat shoes for casual days at the lake, a relaxed picnic or when grocery shopping in the summer but I’d never wear them for dinner parties or anything that has a hint of formality. Again, that’s just my personal preference.
How to Wear Sperrys Topsiders
Sperry’s Topsiders, also referred to as boat shoes or deck shoes, are casual loafers that are laced up. These iconic shoes were incredibly popular in the 1980s but fell out of favor with the fashion set in the early 1990s. So, how do you wear Sperrys? While die-hard fans continued to wear the formerly famous footwear, it wasn’t until two or three years ago that Sperrys became cool again. Everyone from Hollywood starlets to sports stars and hip-hop artists are wearing them. Here is a quick guide on how to wear your new pair of Sperrys. Wear your Sperrys with jeans. Make sure that your jeans fit you properly; you don’t want to wear pants that are hanging down around your ankles. Furthermore you don’t want your jeans to be bunched up at the bottom. While skinny jeans don’t work for most men, those who have a slim build and are tall can get away with tighter jeans that are cuffed. Wear your Sperrys with chinos or khaki pants. Again, as mentioned above with jeans, make sure your pants fit you properly. Sperry Topsiders will look great with any type of casual pants, and will be a bit dressier looking than flip-flops or sneakers. Wear your Sperrys with shorts. Sperrys actually will look their best when paired with a great pair of shorts. Avoid wearing cargo shorts, and stick to slim-cut shorts that fall one or two inches above the knee. Don’t wear Sperrys with socks. Although Topsiders are a shoe, they’re almost sandalish because they look best worn with bare feet. If you absolutely must wear socks, wear the no-show type that are cut well below the ankle. Don’t wear Sperrys with dress pants. Topsiders are a casual type of shoe that are a bit more sophisticated than runners or sandals, but this doesn’t mean that they are appropriate shoes for formal occasions. Wear proper dress shoes with dress pants. Don’t wear Sperrys with athletic gear. Never pair a track suit, running shorts, athletic pants or athletic shorts with Sperrys. Why? Because it just looks ridiculous!
