You can never go wrong with black and white. The simplest colors and easiest to find are white shirts, black ties, and black belts.
The Shirt
The shirt’s color should be white – plain and simple. If style, this website or even me mean anything to you – stay away from colored shirts during a black tie event! OK, maybe you don’t care about me *that much* but you SHOULD care about your black tie etiquette.
The Tie
Well, this is going to surprise you but a black tie attire doesn’t mean it has to be a black tie per say. You can also wear a bow tie.
If you don’t have one, it’s time to get it. Just be really careful about getting a tie. Get a tie that can last a while. If you get a silk tie, just keep in mind that you will be looking after it more because silk is easier to snag.
